Country Living, a widely-read travel and lifestyle magazine and website, recently listed Burnsville in this year’s “Top 20 Small Mountain Towns To Visit This Summer.” As the closest town to Mountain Air, this quaint and friendly hamlet is just minutes from the gate and offers a convenient spot for local flavor, shopping, supplies and services.
Here’s what Country Living has to say: “Burnsville is often described as a ‘Norman Rockwell’ kind of town, and that is truly the best way to describe this quaint locale that centers around a grassy town square. Catch zzzs at the Nu Wray Inn, the oldest operating inn in Western North Carolina, which has counted Elvis Presley, and the novelist Thomas Wolfe, among its guests. For one heck of a view, hike to Mount Mitchell’s peak (the tallest east of the Mississippi River). Don’t miss the Toe River Studio Tour when 100 artists open their studios along the scenic mountain back roads. There’s also the Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair in August.”
